Learn how SELECTY used ETAP for system-wide validation of protection and coordination compliance for a FPSO brownfield project

ETAP allows a combined tabular and graphical view to have a complete understanding of the electrical system. It's very useful the automated protection zone identification.
By Giovanni Gambirasio, Director at SELECTY

This case study demonstrates how ETAP enabled a rigorous internal review of the existing electrical system of a floating production storage and offloading vessel in order to evaluate the possible approaches to optimization. By using ETAP automated tools, such as Starâ„¢ Evaluation, protection zone identification, and auto-generated TCC drawings, the reviewer was able to analyze, correct, and validate protection settings rapidly and accurately.

Finding an efficient method to identify inconsistencies, assess fault levels, and verify compliance

Challenges

  • Maintaining consistency in protection & coordination across multiple protection devices
  • Evaluating possible improvements and ensuring coordination criteria were respected
  • Assessing Max/Min fault levels to define realistic boundaries for protection operation
  • Ensuring CT/VT inputs, device configuration, and breaker assignments matched the actual installation
  • Identifying missing or incorrect protection elements, crossing characteristics, and misaligned coordination
  • Implementing a version control system to manage setting revisions

Which solutions did they choose?

Selected applications

ETAP Power Simulator advanced analysis and simulation capabilities supported the entire review process:
  • Electrical Digital Twin – Active blueprint of the electrical power system
  • Short Circuit Analysis - Determined maximum and minimum fault levels at MV and LV
  • Protective Device Coordination - Verified device settings, operating zones, characteristic curves, and coordination margins
  • Automated Protection Device Evaluation - Instantly recognized protection zones for cables, motors, transformers, and feeders
  • Star™ Auto Evaluation - Auto-generated time current characteristic (TCC) curves for visualization of protection characteristics, load curves, withstanding limits, transformer inrush, and other characteristics, using a Rule Book for automated comparison of settings against user-defined protection & coordination criteria
  • Revision Management - Created new versions of settings to correct inconsistencies without modifying the original study

Why do they use ETAP?

Main customer benefits

  • Quick detection of missing or incorrect device inputs, such as CT/VT assignments, trip-unit configurations, and breaker links
  • Automatic identification of protection zones, helping to ensure protections are properly modeled and connected
  • Auto-generated TCC curves provide immediate visibility of protection vs motor starting, cable withstanding, and transformer behavior
  • Fast identification of coordination issues, such as crossing characteristics between motor starters and upstream relays
  • Online corrections & validation, enabling the reviewer to adjust protection settings and instantly re-evaluate the updates to coordination
  • Consistent rule-based verification, ensuring settings comply with established engineering criteria defined in rule book resources
  • Efficient revision handling, allowing creation of alternative protection settings without affecting the original study
  • Automated report generation, summarizing settings, alerts, verification checks, and updates for client approval
In summary, SELECTY found that ETAP advanced analysis capabilities enabled them to serve their clients more efficiently. The use of ETAP in their engineering consulting services ensured project alignment with electrical standards, device capabilities, and engineering best practices. They were able to provide a complete system-wide evaluation with one click, providing a consolidated green/red status for protection & coordination across the entire model.

What do they think about ETAP?

Customer perspective

ETAP provides a combined tabular and graphical view which helps to fully understand the electrical system.
The automated protection zone identification is very useful, and the rule-based Star™ Evaluation simplifies consistency checks. I can quickly apply setting revisions, verify coordination, and finalize the internal review efficiently.
